Peterborough based Team Inzane Laverda is our first two-wheel EEMS Campaign Partner, and the first team in the UK to compete with a high performance bike on E85, a blend of 15% petrol with 85% bioethanol distilled from sugar. The team’s ten year old Italian Laverda Formula 650 machine races in the UK Mini Twins Championship, a series usually dominated by modern Japanese Suzuki machines.
In its debut race at Snetteron on 7 July, the Laverda ran faultlessly with team rider, Russell Joyner achieving an excellent top ten finish despite minimal testing and development. Ian Calvert, the teams Technical Director said, "We have made modifications to fuel mapping of the bike to accommodate the green fuel. Early results show an increase in fuel consumption but no loss of power. Mini Twins is a closely controlled formula and thus any changes made have had to be in strict compliance with the rules."
On 27 August 2007, Russell Joyner took the biofuel powered Laverda to three third places at the Mallory Park round of the UK national Mini Twins Championship over the Bank Holiday weekend. The team have calculated that the sugar beet needed to produce the fuel used over their successful weekend at Mallory Park could have been ‘grown’ on just 10 square metres of land.
