Ecclestone seeks to clarify Valencia deal

16th May 2007

Formula One impresario Bernie Ecclestone has sought to clarify a proposed arrangement to stage a Formula One Grand Prix in the Spanish city of Valencia from 2008.

On the Thursday before last weekend’s F1 Spanish Grand Prix Ecclestone announced a seven-year deal for an F1 event titled the European Grand Prix on street circuit in Valencia but added that the arrangement would only go ahead if the president of Valencia's local government, Francisco Camps, was re-elected in polls due to take place on May 27.

The statement drew cricticism from the Spanish government after which Ecclestone insisted that it was not his intention to interfere with the elections. He told Spanish television, "I said I wouldn't formalise a contract until after the elections because I didn't know who I would be signing it with."
