Porsche says it cannot meet EU’s CO2 emissions target

17th March 2008

Porsche’s manager for energy and the environment has told Automotive New Europe that it is impossible for the company to meet the goals that the European Commission is targeting for carbon dioxide reduction, which it says are disproportionate. "The model for CO2 burden-sharing among individual companies being discussed leads to outcomes that Porsche could never meet or could only meet by abandoning its market identity," said Herbert Ampferer, told the paper.

Although the EC is proposing a 130 g/km CO2 fleet average, the paper says Porsche will have to cut average CO2 emissions from its new cars to 144 g/km from 242g/km in 2006, or face progressive fines of up to €95 per gram over the limit. If the EU approves the Commission's proposals, Porsche executives say every Cayenne S premium SUV sold in 2015 and beyond would carry a fine of €9,702.

Porsche has so far produced prototype hybrid powertrains for its Cayenne and the forthcoming Panamera four-door car, and is working on one for the 911 sports car, and on downsizing engines.
