Former head of BMW Motorsport dies

Dieter Stappert, the former head of BMW Motorsport has died at the age of 66.

Prior to joining BMW Austrian born Stappert was the editor of the Swiss motorsport magazine Powerslide. At BMW he established the Junior Team concept in touring car racing and Formula Two which promoted young drivers and was also instrumental in the Munich based manufacturers move into Formula One in 1980 which led to an F1 World Championship victory three years later.

Following BMW’s withdrawal form Formula One at the end of 1986 Stappert moved into a management role in motorcycle racing initially with HB 250cc team and most recently with the Yamaha Pertamina Indonesia team in the 250cc MotoGP class.
