TfL to take Scania bioethanol double decker into service
23rd April 2007
A Scania OmniCity double-decker bus to be deployed by Transport for London will be powered by ethanol made from Brazilian sugar cane, Transport for London Environment (TfL) Coordinator Helen Woolston told a bioethanol conference in London on Friday. The bus will join a fleet of seven hybrid diesel-electric buses currently running in London, where TfL plans to introduce 50 more hybrid buses by the end of 2008.
TfL has just completed trials of hydrogen-powered buses supplied by DaimlerChrysler, and plans to buy 10 of these in the next year or so, Ms Woolston told the conference.
The alternative fuel buses are part of the London mayor's goal of cutting London's CO2 emissions by 60% from 1990 levels by 2025. TfL is also considering basing London congestion charging on vehicles' CO2 emissions with a banding system more closely aligned to the government's VED banding system, Ms Woolston added.
