British motorsport design and engineering company, KW Motorsport, has taken a major step forward to strengthen its engineering capability in LMP Sportscars with the acquisition of the 40% scale, rolling road, wind tunnel model of the Reynard 02S.
KW boss, Kieron Salter, said: "Ownership of this model will allow us to increase our knowledge of LMP1 cars and our ability to engineer this category for the future. It will give us a platform for LMP development and offers the flexibility to develop hybrids as well as new chassis to the new aerodynamic regulations in LMP1 or LMP2. It has already been announced that we will be assisting Creation with the next generation of the DBA, we can now support this programme with a full windtunnel aero programme to maximise the cars potential as a hybrid."
The Reynard 02S is the LMP675 chassis from which the highly competitive DBA and Zytek 04S Sportscar have been derived. Since going into international competition, these chassis have recorded 9 pole positions and taken several victories against stiff factory-backed opposition. They are currently competing in the 2005 Le Mans Endurance Series.
Kieron Salter and Will Phillips established KWM in 2002 were, of course, instrumental in the initial design and production of the Reynard 02S programme, before the demise of the Brackley based company. They have since been providing services to in Sportscars and Champ Cars, and worked closely with Creation to develop a new aerodynamic package for the DBA for Le Mans. KWM also worked with Nasamax in 2004 to design and race the first ever LMP1 hybrid with the unique Nasamax bio-ethanol hybrid.
