'Clean Racing' Conference Plots Way Forward For Energy Efficient Automotive Developments

The Motorsport Industry Association’s (MIA) ‘Clean Racing’ conference, held on 22 October at the ICC in Birmingham, attracted an audience of more than 120 international delegates from across the motorsport and automotive world. A string of prominent industry speakers encouraged greater collaboration between motorsport suppliers and vehicle manufacturers to exploit emerging commercial opportunities and to speed the development of fuel-efficient road car technology.

“The high quality of delegates illustrates growing awareness of a valuable new business opportunity, where the unique knowledge, skills and resources of motorsport companies are harnessed for new ‘green’ automotive initiatives,” commented Chris Aylett, Chief Executive of the MIA. “The specialist performance engineering businesses located within the UK’s Motorsport Valley are unusually well equipped to help global carmakers address the technological challenges they face in preparing for a fuel-efficient future. This event has paved the way for a number of new technology partnerships, and has helped a wide variety of companies understand how motorsport can be used to promote ‘green’ innovations to a somewhat sceptical public.”

The event provided a platform for the unveiling of the new 200 HPD, a petrol/electric-powered version of the MG TF jointly developed by MG Rover Group and MIRA.

Also on display was the Team Nasamax Reynard Cosworth LMP900, which made history in June 2003 when it became the first bio-ethanol-powered car to compete in the Le Mans 24-hour race.

The MIA conference’s world-renowned speaker list included Herb Fishel from the USA – formerly Executive Director of General Motors (GM) Motorsports; and Ulrich Baretzky – Head of Engine Technology at Audi Sport and a key figure behind the Audi and Bentley Le Mans-winning motorsport programmes. Both fully endorsed the energy efficient motorsport plans promoted by the MIA and promised their ongoing support, urging the MIA to create even closer motorsport relationships with the world’s major automotive companies.

“The MIA will take up this challenge on behalf of the industry and push for further progress – something clearly demanded by the prominent speakers and delegates attending this event,” confirmed Chris Aylett.
