Torquay based Ratt Racing Motorsport Engineering is continuing to develop Bioethanol powered competition cars including the very successful Britax Mini Cooper campaigned by Pete Crewes in the Xtreme Mighty Mini, Dunlop Motorsport News Saloon Car Championship and at the Powernights events throughout 2007.
Crewes has seen many wins this season and the car has been very popular, continuing to attract attention from competitors and spectators alike. The fuel injected Mini was converted to run on bioethanol through a process of component testing early in 2007 and has resulted in both an increase in tractable torque together with a welcome reduction in operating temperatures.
Driver Pete Crewes says, “I am delighted with the overall performance of the car and it demonstrates how any engine technology can be suited to conversion to become more environmentally friendly, with additional benefits”.
Ratt Racing, responsible for the development and testing of the car, is owned and run by Mike Tarr, who has considerable engineering experience and a competitor in a range of motorsport disciplines. He is now starting to specialise in bioethanol conversions for both fuel injected and carburettor fuelled cars – one of only a handful in the South West.
Mike says, “Interest in bioethanol conversions is increasing as awareness grows at club motorsport level. As more knowledge is gained and shared it will ensure the cost of conversion is affordable”.
