TOCA, the British Touring Car Championship and EEMS
TOCA is the organiser of the British Touring Car Championship which, outside of Formula One, attracts the UK's largest motorsport crowds and enjoys extensive national and international television and media coverage.
TOCA actively encourages the use of alternative fuels in the BTCC. TOCA technical commissioner Peter Riches who draws up the series rules explained:
"I believe that adopting alternative fuels is a culture issue. You have to create the circumstances for teams to take that route. We are closely following the progress of the EEMS project as we feel that it helps us to accommodate teams wanting to use alternative fuels now and in the future. We have a flexible approach to the rule book and are open to any suggestions to make alternative fuel cars competitive."
"The BTCC is contested by 2-litre production based touring cars conforming either to TOCA's own regulations or the FIA's Super 2000 rules."
"In the TOCA Touring class engines must be based on a model of which at least 2500 units have been produced. Cars must weigh a minimum of 1174kgs and are required to fit a number of TOCA specified parts including transmissions and brakes. In the Super 2000 class 4-cylinder engines are rev-limited to 8500rpm, 5-cylinders to 8750rpm and 6-cylinders to 9000rpm. Front-wheel drive cars must weigh a minimum of 1110kg and rear-wheel drive cars a minimum of 1140kg. In both cases the weight includes the driver. Cars may be fitted with a five speed H-pattern gearbox or a six-speed sequential gearbox but must carry an additional 30kg if the second option is chosen. In both classes aerodynamic downforce is strictly limited although front splitters and rear wings are used."
"Each round of the championship comprises three races. A success ballast system in which weight is added to or subtracted from cars according to their finishing positions at race meetings is used with the aim of preventing one car and driver dominating the championship."
