February 2006 : Fiona Leggate, BTCC driver
http://www.fionaleggate.co.uk
With the news in January that EEMS would be sponsoring Fiona Leggate for another season in BTCC, driving the now-familiar Astra Coupe, what better site than Fiona's own for our 'site of the month'?
This season, Fiona has acquired sponsorship from local dealership Thurlby Motors which will allow her to concentrate on her racing, rather than maintaining a full-time job as she did last year. The site makes a refreshing change from the usual bland corporate offerings, with family photographs and a home-made look. It's bang up-to-date though and will be well worth following through the 2006 season.
January 2006 : Autosport International
http://www.autosport-international.com/
Held every January, this show has grown over the years and now attracts significant new product launches in both automotive and motorsport. Stars of the 2006 show include the remarkable Prodrive P2 (you can read the press release here) and the pointless but still magnificent Maybach Exelero, on the Fulda Tyres stand.
The show has an unusual format, with Thursday and Friday as trade-only days and the weekend open to the public. This meant that the organisers were able to offer a large area in one of the halls to Formula One in Schools for their finals - an event attended by several other members of the Learning Grid of engineering activities for schools, who gave demonstrations and answered questions from show-goers.
Also with a significant presence at the show was Motorsport Development UK, which hosted an international business lounge on the first two days of the show and then used the stand at the weekend to publicise the ways in which people can take part in motorsport, from driver scholarships to acting as volunteer race marshals. Motorsport Development UK Chairman Bob Gilbert was interviewed on the main Autosport stage for the launch of the Motorsport 100, a new initiative that will act as a showcase for UK motorsport.
