French government announces CO2-linked registration tax plans

6th December 2007

Yesterday, 5th December marked the launch of the French government’s ‘bonus-malus’ CO2-linked car registration tax regime, targeted at reducing the CO2 emissions of new cars. Penalties levied on bands of relatively high-emitting cars (160 g/km-plus) will range from €200 to €2,600, while tax incentives to buy cars emitting less than 130 g/km will range from €200 to €1,000, with a further €300 available to buyers who consign a car 15 or more years old to scrap. The scheme is intended to be self-financing, inasmuch as revenue from penalties will balance the cost of incentives.
