India plans for one million hydrogen vehicles by 2020
7th June 2007
A National Hydrogen Energy road Map revealed on Monday this week by India’s Minister of New and Renewable Energy lays down a pathway for the development of a hydrogen energy infrastructure in the country, including the large-scale introduction of hydrogen fuelled vehicles by 2020.
At a meeting on the National Hydrogen Energy Road Map: Opportunities for Public Private Partnership (PPP), Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shri Vilas Muttemwar said that the Ministry was confident of achieving over 10% of the total installed power generating capacity in the country by 2012 from renewable sources. Renewable power generating capacity currently contributes 7.75% of India’s installed generating capacity.
The Ministry set up a National Hydrogen Energy Board in 2003. This Board has now set up a steering group under the Chairmanship of Ratan Tata, chairman of the Tata Group which owns Tata Motors, to prepare a National Hydrogen Road Map.
Under this initiative about one million hydrogen fuel vehicles, of which about 75% are expected to be two- and three-wheelers, could be plying Indian roads by 2020, by which time aggregate hydrogen-based power generating capacity of 1000 MW would be in place.
Ratan Tata said, “Hydrogen may remain elusive for a long time because there are challenges in generating, storing and to distributing it.” But he added, “India has enormous strength in scientists and manpower, and I am confident that if not us, our future generation will definitely have clean fuel.”
