MEPs: EC’s proposed car CO2 cuts deadline is too short

9th May 2007

MEPs on the European Parliament’s environment committee have said that the European Commission’s proposed 2012 deadline limiting CO2 emissions does not give car manufacturers enough time to adapt their technology, the SMMT has reported, via the news source ENDS. UK Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies has suggested setting a more ambitious target with a longer timeframe, indicating 2014 as a possible date, since it is when new Euro 6 noxious emissions limits are due to come into force.

The European Parliament Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee is due to debate a draft report for the EC’s consultations on 25-27 June, and has set a deadline for amendments of 16 July, before the Committee adopts its report in early October, and submits it to a plenary session of the European Parliament in November. Thereafter the Commission will propose, if possible in 2007,and at the latest by mid-2008, a legislative

framework to the Council and European Parliament in order to reach the CO2 reduction objective.
