David Brabham Confirmed As Official Ambassador For Energy Efficient Motorsport

Top-flight sportscar racer David Brabham has become an official ambassador for the Government-backed Energy Efficient MotorSport (EEMS) programme. Brabham, who is expected to be confirmed as a driver for the Aston Martin Racing team in 2005, will now actively promote the efforts of EEMS in encouraging greater use of alternative fuels and energy-efficient materials within all forms of motorsport.
Brabham was a guest speaker at an EEMS workshop held on Thursday January 13 at the Autosport International Show in the NEC, Birmingham. The workshop, which attracted a capacity crowd, gathered a wide variety of views from attending delegates and detailed some of the key EEMS initiatives that will be progressed in 2005.
"The aims and philosophy behind the EEMS programme are very close to my heart," commented Brabham. "As a self-confessed 'tree-hugger', I feel we can all do much more to reduce the impact we have on the environment. Governments, companies and individuals must obviously all play their part, but motorsport is well placed to help build real momentum behind the 'green' cause.
"We've already seen some progress, such as diesel and bio-ethanol-powered sportscars participating in endurance racing, but so much more must be done. We must step up efforts to harness the expertise of motorsport suppliers - they are uniquely equipped to help bring forward the development of 'green' technologies and alternative fuels for use in road cars. Then the motorsport community has to work with car companies to use the sport as a means of testing these new 'green' solutions, as well as building a public profile for them through competition.
"A shift towards greater recognition of environmental concerns is inevitable in motorsport, and we should take the opportunity to shape a new future for the sport before change is forced upon us by regulatory bodies," he concluded.
