Green Light for Motorsport in Wales
18th August 2006 (Source: National Motorsport Week )
Dozens of people say they want to become more involved in motorsport after visiting the Welsh Automotive Forum exhibition in Cardiff over the weekend at the start of National Motorsport Week in Wales, August 12-20.
Hundreds of rally fans, shoppers and office workers visited the stand in the city’s main shopping precinct and scores put their names down in the free to enter competition to be special guests on Saturday 2nd December of top rally team Hankook, at the Service Area in Swansea plus two tickets for the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff to watch the all action super-special stage at this year’s Wales Rally GB.
MSA British Rally Elite member and BRC front-runner Stuart Jones, took time out from building his latest Mitsubishi Evo, following his serious accident on the Rally Isle of Man, to lend his support to the event. Stuart and his sister Kim, who is team co-ordinator with Hankook SJR Motorsport chatted to rally fans, shoppers and office workers and signed Hankook posters in a special promotion day in Cardiff, which is host city for Wales Rally GB in December.
On hand the next day to promote circuit racing was Cardiff-born Tom Haines who described his experiences competing in the 2006 Formula Palmer Audi Championship to shoppers and fans alike. While officials from Wales Rally GB, the British Women Racing Drivers’ Club, event administrators and the British Marshals Club gave advice on dozens of ways anyone can enjoy and become involved in motorsport; from two to four wheels, via school and university courses, training courses to become an official like a scrutineer, timekeeper, marshal. The message was clear: motorsport can provide great challenges, great camaraderie and great fun.
Taking centre stage was a Subaru rally car provided by Promax Motorsport of Llanelli and with scenes from rounds of the World Rally Championship flashing across the giant plasma screen, shoppers were treated to a different and entertaining interlude to their regular shopping routine.
Whether booking up to see Wales Rally GB for the first time or signing up to become a marshal, the Welsh Automotive Forum’s exhibition to promote the inaugural National Motorsport Week was a great success with dozens of newcomers showing interest in becoming directly involved in the sport.
