Steve Bunkhall, Project Leader of Motorsport Development UK’s Energy Efficient Motorsport (EEMS) initiative , today welcomed the developments for the future in Formula One announced by FIA’s Max Mosley in his Friday press conference at the Silverstone British Grand Prix.
" It’s absolutely the right way to go. Motorsport needs to be seen to be relevant both to the automotive industry and to the public," said Steve. "In particular the idea of using energy storage systems is one to which F1 is ideally suited. "
Referring to Max Mosley's challenge to manufacturers to limit engine power by fuel flow, he added: "We would like to draw attention to the fact that we have been working on the issue of limiting engine power by controlling energy flow, looking principally at Touring Car applications. This is for two reasons: firstly to encourage development of fuel-efficient engines and secondly to enable equivalence between different fuels. We have recently discussed ideas with Peter Wright of the FIA who was very interested in what we are doing, and we look forward to working alongside all motorsport organisations towards making motorsport part of the solution to climate change instead of being seen as part of the problem. "
The work that EEMS has been doing in this area has been written up in the latest (July) issue of the UK based journal Racecar Engineering
