Students from the National College for Motorsport are zooming ahead thanks to the help of professional race team Astromega as well as other high profile race teams.
Astromega are providing an excellent opportunity to students at the National College for Motorsport, based in Silverstone and Corby. The team is providing cars on which students practice their skills and offering the chance for students to take part in race days including Euro F3000 Series, A1 Grand Prix and Formula Renault. Students who have excelled in their studies will then be offered employment within an Astromega Race Team.
The National College of Motorsport is a partnership of three Further Education Colleges based in the heart of the motorsport valley led by Tresham Institute of Further & Higher Education and includes Oxford & Cherwell Valley College and Milton Keynes College. The colleges formed the first Centre of Vocational Excellence for Motorsport and Performance Engineering to tackle the decline and shortage of craft technician skills within the motorsport industry. Tresham Institute specialise in training race technicians.
Students took part in various high level motorsport events last weekend and returned with excellent feedback from the motorsport industry.
Sam Moores and Barney Crumpler, studying the Motorsport Race Technician course at the college’s Silverstone centre, travelled to Belgium last week to work with the team at the Spa Francorchamps circuit. The students travelled to the team’s base in Brussels with English racing driver Craig Dolby who went on to win the Formula Renault 1600 Open championship.
The students worked as part of the team for the duration of a very busy but rewarding weekend and as a result they have been invited to stay on and help prepare a Formula Renault 2000 car for a test day at Spa this week.
Astromega Team Manager Sam Boyle said “Sam and Barney, were crucial to Craig’s success and proved invaluable to the team.”
Several other National College for Motorsport students were hard at work at Silverstone last weekend at the final round of the British Touring Car Championship. Six students were selected to work alongside the tyre technicians from Dunlop Motorsport supporting the teams racing at Silverstone. Tony Leake of Dunlop was very impressed by the commitment put in by the students suggesting that this alliance could be more permanent.
Formula Renault Team Coles Racing were also racing at Silverstone last weekend in the final round of the UK Formula Renault Championship offering some excellent work experience to two National College for Motorsport students, Russell Turner and Craig Dodd.
Jim Harrod, Motorsport Manager at the National College for Motorsport said:‘These opportunities are an excellent way for our students to get experience of working within the motorsport industry.’
