EEMS signs up Formula Woman as its first Championship Campaign Partner

27th March 2007 (Source: Energy Efficient Motorsport )

EEMS, the Energy Efficient Motorsport programme of Motorsport Development UK, has awarded EEMS Campaign Partner status to the Formula Woman Championship, as recognition for its commitment to energy efficiency in motorsport. This is the first championship to become an EEMS Campaign Partner.

The championship, supported and managed by Essex-based Hyperion Motorsport, will be the first in the UK to run exclusively on E85 biofuel blend (85% bio-ethanol and 15% petrol) with the conversion of its standard Caterham Roadsport race cars. Racing on biofuel is part of Hyperion’s development of the Formula Woman concept, which will address energy efficient and environmental issues surrounding motorsport.

We are delighted to sign up Formula Woman,’ said EEMS Programme Manager Alan Mercer. ‘Its plans to instil energy efficiency into its championship, and into the training of its competitors, as well as the change to a sustainable fuel in competition, fits well with the objectives of this Campaign and we are impressed with their commitment.

EEMS Campaign Partners sign a six-point charter to commit to a series of actions to become more energy efficient and to spread the message, leading the industry into the development and use of sustainable technologies and fuels. The initiative is open to all organisations in the motorsport industry. They can then use the EEMS logos and take part in special EEMS Campaign Partner activities. Full details are on the EEMS website.

Hyperion has been working closely with an environmental management consultancy to understand the impact not only of their workshop operations but also their on-track race support. Areas such as waste management, energy efficiency and use of alternative fuels are all being addressed.

Hyperion’s Managing Director Steve Hindle was enthusiastic about the change to biofuel:

We took the project to Minister Racing Engines to initiate an engineering and test programme that would allow us to run an alternative fuel and address emissions and consumption during the season.

We’re already at the position with this sustainable biofuel where our cars will generate the same level of performance as a standard Caterham Roadsport, a demonstration which we hope will lead others to follow suit.

We now have a fantastic opportunity not only to engage women into motorsport but to look at some of the broader issues that we face as an industry. Either we create and drive the agenda or we will become subject to legislation.

The first round of the 2007 Formula Woman Championship is scheduled for Pembrey, Wales on 28-29 July. Applications for the championship close on Friday 17 April 2007.
